Chumash Casino & Resort Santa Ynez, CA

In the hills, just 30 minutes Northeast of Santa Barbara, California, sits the Santa Ynez band of Chumash Band of Indians Reservation.  In 2015 it was ready for a massive expansion consisting of a 30,000 square-foot casino floor expansion, a complete revamp of the 4-Diamond Award-winning Willows Steakhouse, Buffet, and a new hotel tower adding an additional 215 rooms. Over the course of one year, starting in May of 2015 and ending in May 2016, Glenn Rieder completed 17 different venues, using a variety of different materials and fabrication techniques. It all starts at the casino entry, where you are mesmerized by a series of abstract radius platforms leading to the casino floor, along with a beautifully lit custom curved acrylic panel above. A brand new upscale cashier’s cage was added with a custom powder-coated metal grille. Around the casino floor, you pass the newly-expanded non-smoking gaming section, the unique player’s club millwork pods, and a series of architectural acrylic art columns hanging from the ceiling. Glenn Rieder also handled the fabrication and installation of four restaurant venues: Willows Steakhouse, Café, Buffet, and Food Court. Willows Steakhouse was constructed using dark-toned Walnut combined with custom metal and glass features to give it a modern feel. The Buffet is very streamlined, combining stone and laminate, while the Café is very much modernized, using Hickory combined with colorfully-upholstered seating and uniquely-tinted faux glass doors. Finally, the highlight of the project was the casino’s center bar. The center bar’s design was a complete 360-degree circle, focused to be the highlight of the casino floor. The combination of molded plastics, leather upholstery, and large hanging acrylic and millwork fins was an engineering challenge that Glenn Rieder excels in when faced with the opportunity.
